A post medieval white metal finger ring with "posy" inscription. The finger ring does not appear to be definitively silver and may well be a compound but it could still have a high base silver content. The ring is D-shaped in cross-section with a convex outer face. The inner face exhibits the inscription "CHOS NOT TO CHANG" in Roman capitals. There appear to be traces of gilding remaining on the interior. The diameter is 22mm and the weight 3.49g.

In general Roman capitals began to be used for inscriptions on posy rings from the mid 16th century and were replaced by Italics by the second quarter of the 17th century (Oman 1974, 40-41). As a result it is more likely that this ring is later 16th to early 17th century in date. Posey rings are a simple gold band engraved with a brief sentiment or poem inside. They were given by men and women as an expression of love, as a wedding ring or as a means of showing regard and friendship. They were considered magical, having the power when worn to enforce the poesy (poem) engraved on them. They believed that the words touching the vein running directly from the fourth finger to the heart have a special power. Both (LANCUM-AC5027) discovered in Lancashire and (SOM-D4A002) discovered in Somerset exhibit the same upper-case inscription and interior gilding. These two examples are dated to the mid-16th century when the use of Roman capitals began to be used. Inscriptions in italics became more popular by the mid-17th century.

The object is dated to the Post Medieval period, circa 17th century and is therefore over 300 years old. The object is believed to have more than 10% precious metal content and so may qualify as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
