HOOKED TAG

Unique ID: LEIC-DF7392

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete silver hooked tag. The hooked tag has a triangular plate with a tri-lobed rear edge, comprising two large rounded lobes with a small triangular lobe in between. The two larger lobes are each pierced with a circular perforation. At the opposite end is a sharply-curved hook with a thickened collar, incised with parallel lines. An incised double line border runs around the edge of the plate and inside the circular perforations, forming an inward-pointing chevron at the hook end. The surface is slightly worn. The back is plain with some scratching.

Notes:

This hooked tag can be classified as Read's (2008) Class B, Type 1 which has a triangular plate and ridged collar at the junction between plate and hook (Read 2008, p. 21 and no, 98). The type has been dated broadly to between the eighth and early twelfth centuries. The Hanslope example compares well with several examples on the PAS database, for instance WILT-7E2A83

Conclusion:

As the object is made of silver and more than 300 years old, it constitutes potential Treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act (1996).
