Unique ID: WMID-DC00D2

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A complete copper alloy finger ring, of probable Roman dating (4th Century AD).

The finger ring is polygonal in shape, with eight external facets (octagonal). The hoop has an circular cross section. The facets are flat. Each one is 10.8 m in length. No decoration is present on any facet.

The finger ring has a 21.4 mm external diameter, 18.0 mm internally. The hoop is 2.2 mm thick and 1.6 mm wide. It weighs 0.9 g.

The finger ring is a mid to dark green colour with an even surface patina.

Similar polygonal finger rings have been recorded on the PAS database, including WILT-BDB6F9 and HAMP-D6BA2D. This is considered to be that of a Henig Type IX (Guiraud type 9a). Henig (1974, 50) suggests that polygonal rings are a third century type while Crummy (1983, 49, ref. 1788) notes that polygonal hoops tend to be fourth century in date.

Class: Henig Type IX (Guiraud type 9a)
