Object type certainty: Certain

Post Medieval (mid 16th to 17th centuries) dress fastener - eye-clasp. A copper alloy dress fastening which is the 'eye' and not the 'hook'. The body of the dress fastening is oval in plan with a truncated end which, instead, has a rectangular loop. There are three rounded loop attachments evenly spaced around the edge of the fastening. The front of the object is decorated with a foliate or floral design with a central trefoil engraving, it has an outer border of incised or punched circles or rings. There is a ridged collar at the juncture of the plate and eye. The rear of the object is undecorated. It has a dark brown patina with a white metal coating on each face, probably of tin or silver.

Dimensions: 31mm in lenght, 40mm in width, 1mm thick, 7.6g.

The object is probably a dress-fastening, but according to Read (2008:164-5) there is no certain evidence for this. This dress fastener is classified as Read Class A, Type 2 which probably dates to the early Post Medieval period, perhaps the mid 16th to 17th centuries. Read (ibid) illustrates an almost identical example, No. 635.
