Copper alloy book fitting, a catch-piece of Howsam type A.6. Sheet metal plate with a straight-sided central part and expanded at either end: one end bears a pair of tabs which are tightly rolled to retain the spindle [now lost] for a hinged fastening; the other end is engrailed at its sides and end with a drilled fixing hole of diameter 2.8mm. The object has been bent into a curl, a form unrelated to its working life. Suggested date: late medieval or early post-medieval, 1400-1650.
