A fragment of a ceramic vessel of Roman date, c.AD 43 - 410. The vessel is a rim and body sherd from a local (unsourced) miscellaneous greyware dish/vessel, with a semi-circular projecting rim. The fabric is fine and sandy with a smooth feel. It is a pale grey colour throughout. A faint band of zig-zag decoration (comprised of conjoined triangular impressions) is present below the rim.

The sherd is 91.5mm x 65.6mm x 15.9mm (7.6mm without rim). Weight: 42.1g. Overall diameter: 24cm (projected using rim chart); approx.7% remaining.

'Greyware' describes various types of locally produced pottery that were made in many different areas of Britain. They are one of the most common type of pottery found on Roman sites in Britain.
