BUCKLE

Unique ID: SF-79894B

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete cast copper-alloy pin originating from an annular buckle of Medieval date, c. 1200-1400. One end demonstrates a broken open loop which would have fitted around the original buckle frame. Directly in front of this loop are a pair of thick moulded transverse ridges on the upper surface of the buckle pin (sub-rectangular in section), which tapers down its length to a blunt point. Preserved in good condition with an even green patina, it survives to a length of 36.68mm long, 4.26mm thick at its midpoint, and weighs 3.98g. See record SUSS-9C4D88 for a complete example of a buckle demonstrating how the pin was attached to the frame, as well as Egan and Pritchard's publication (1991, no. 549) for a pin of similar form.
