COIN

Unique ID: NMS-77754B

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Copper alloy radiate of Carausius, an early type perhaps related to the EXPECTATE VENI issues but with the typology altered so that a togate figure of Carausius standing right grasps hands with a draped female figure standing left, with a hitherto unrecorded exergue signature of M.C. and (as is usual) no field marks, obverse [...]ARAVSIVS[...], radiate bust right, reverse [...]I, emperor greeting female, approximately 17mm diameter, weight 3.49g, c.AD286-7. Sam Moorhead writes: No EXPECTATE VENI coins are recorded for the MC mark. This coin is probably a CONCORDIA MILITVM or related issue; Webb 251 records a CONCORD MIL coin of this type with mintmark MC which has not been seen since. This coin appears to confirm this type for the MC issue.
