A complete cast copper-alloy strap fitting or slide of possible 11th century date.

Description: It is formed from a cast circular D-shaped loop with a integral decorative 'bezel' on the flat edge. The ring is ovoid in cross-section with a mostly flat interior face. The bezel takes the form of a decorative male face in relief, with large beard moustache and bushy hair, perhaps intended to look vegative. The face has a long flat nose and large round eyes with eyebrows running straight out of the line of the nose. The entire object is a dark orangey brown colour.

Measurements: Height: 15.79mm, Width: 14.63mm, Thickness: 10.7mm (at bezel, 3.51mm on band) and weights 4.26g

Description: Parallels for this object's form are found on the PAS database @: SUR-552D78, SF-6FC542, SUR-35A508, HAMP-7E10A6, HAMP-5D7A36 and WILT-222C93. These are interpreted as being c.11th century AD, in date with parallels drawn to Anglo-Scandinavian socketed hooks that have Ringerike style decoration. This example is however decorated in an entirely different way from these examples with its human face rather than raised cruciform as the linked examples. Dating is therefore suggested as 11th century in date..
