Copper alloy sword handle. Cast pommel and grip from a sword. The pommel is an apparently solid plain conical counterweight with a rounded apical knop. There is a constriction below the pommel, after which the object assumes a four-sided form with a slight waist centrally set relative to its surviving extent; this may have served as a handgrip or may have been clad with an outer layer of wood, bone or antler. The grip ends with a bevelled edge to a rectangular aperture c.13mm across with the fringe of a continuation of similar diameter, mostly lost; this rebate would have received the iron tang of a blade. It is now empty to a depth of 14mm. The simple form of pommel is associated with swords of 3rd-century types. Suggested date: later Roman, 200-300. The good condition of this rare type of object commends it as a 'find of note'.
Length: 91.8mm, Diameter (at pommel): 31.9mm, Weight: 87.21gms.
