A copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 1), cf. Mackreth 2011, Part 3, 1a. Plate 54 dating to the late 1st -early 2nd century AD. The brooch is a hinged example with tubular wings with end caps. The head of the brooch rises up from the wings and tapers downwards forming the bow of the object, terminating at the foot. The upper bow is decorated with a raised central panel which runs the length of the brooch. The panel appears to be decorated with transverse ridges however this is uncertain due to wear. The end of each wing is decorated three vertical ridges of which the central ridge is decorated with horizontal notches.
At the rear of the object the axis bar is contained within the closed cylindrical wings and the pin is missing. The catchplate which is complete curves outwards from the rear of the bow and measures 7.5mm in width.
Dimensions: 38mm in length, 25mm in width, 11mm thick (at the head), 10.5g.
The object has a mid-green patina which is corroded in places. Similar examples can be found in Hattatt, (2008), p300.
