A complete copper-alloy thumb rest from a drinking vessel or tankard of Post-Medieval date, c. AD 1650 - 1750. The main element of the object comprises a sub-ovate longitudinal panel with thick rectangular section. One end of the panel is rounded with a circular perforation through it. The thumb rest would have been attached to the vessel proper by and axis bar through this perforation, allowing it to pivot. The opposite end of the panel tapers to a rounded knop. A D-sectioned cross bar sits atop the main panel. This is where the thumb would be placed in order to open the lid of the vessel.

The metal has a mid-green patina and is worn. The object is 35.1mm long, 16.9mm wide, 23.2mm thick and weighs 11.7g.

Class: Thumb rest
