A copper-alloy Post-Medieval token/jetton or medallet manufactured in the Dutch Republic (specifically for the province of Gelderland) dating to 1599, commemorating the defeats of the Spanish under Francisco de Mendoza (specifically the resistance at the Bommelerwaard) by Maurice, Prince of Orange and Nassau. Zeeland mint, initial mark: castle. Obverse; crowned arms of Zealand, CVI TRIBVTVM TRIBVTVM. Reverse; Moses, Aaron and Hur standing on mountain watching the Israelites fighting with the Amalikites, praying to divine cloud inscribed 'Jehovah' in Hebrew above, VICTORIA A DEO PRECIBVS (Praise be to God for Victory). Preserved in worn condition, it measures 29.14mm in diameter, and weighs 3.4g.
Tokens such as these were produced in series during the later 16th century as a means of commemorating Spanish defeats as part of the growing independence movement in the Low Countries, though this particular type seems to be extremely rare.
