An incomplete cast lead-alloy token of probable later 15th-early 16th century date. Obverse; long cross quartering token, single pellet and two fleur-de-lys in each angle within inner solid internally-spiked border, incredibly worn pseudo-legend around reading: [.......]A[......]AON (reverse-barred). Reverse; long cross quartering token, four pellets in two angles and three pellets in two angles within inner solid internally-spiked border, pseudo legend around which seems to be unfinished as it only covers half the token, reading: IW/N[...]:/-/- . Preserved in good condition with a cream patina, it measures 28.07mm in diameter, 1.64mm thick, and weighs 7.0g.
This token appears to be unparalleled, but given its size and the similarity of its designs to both late Medieval groats and the groat-sized 'Boy Bishop' tokens issued at Bury St Edmunds and Ely, a later Medieval to early Post-Medieval date seems reasonable. It may reflect a contemporary copy of a boy bishop token, or alternatively a practice piece produced in order to test out designs.
This has been noted as an interesting find by the recorder.
