An incomplete and misshapen Medieval copper-alloy closed sewing thimble (1350-1450).
This thimble has sloping sides and is slightly pointed at the top rather than domed. It is now oval at the base as it is squashed slightly and forms a 'beehive' shape. The outer face is covered with drilled pits or indentations.
The outer face has a shiny greenish brown patina and the pits are filled with consolidated soil or corrosion products. The inside is smooth and plain. A small notch in the rim may be a feature of the method of manufacture.
The thimble is very thin and in poor condition but has patches of a dark greenish brown patina.
Height: 14.8mm; width: 17.8mm; thickness: 15.0mm; thickness of walls: 0.3mm. Weight: 2.21g.
A similar thimble has been published, classified as a light duty thimble and dated 1350-1450 (Holmes 1988: 1, fig. 1c).
