Incomplete copper alloy Roman Colchester Derivative Rearhook brooch of Mackreth's (2011) Type CDRH 1b. The pin mechanism and the catchplate are missing.
The head exhibits incomplete C-shaped wings which would have formed the spring case for the sprung pin mechanism. Projecting from the centre of the head is the stub of the rearhook. The wings are both decorated with a bead-and-reel design. The reverse of the wings exhibit iron corrosion product from the missing sprung pin mechanism. One patch retains traces of the coils from the spring. The bow arches back from the head and tapers to a worn break. It is decorated with a central longitudinal recess with a wavy ridge running down the centre. This is flanked on either side by a series of punched dots, now partially obscured by iron corrosion product. The remains of the catchplate project from the reverse of the bow.
A similar example is illustrated in Mackreth, D, 2011, Vol. II, p. 41, pl. 38, no.939.
