A cast Roman (AD 100-200) copper-alloy, ram's head terminal, for the handle of a patera type pan.
Description: The ram's head is moulded in relief with the horns curling around the ears with a moulded ridge between them on the top of the head. The face is solidly cast, with subtle defined but very clear facial features. The shaft survives only to a lmite extent flaring slightly from behind the head and is decorated with overlapping mouldings possibly implying a long fleece. The object is mottled various shades of light green and brown typical of patinated copper-alloy.
Dimensions:
Full length: 53.89mm, weight:50.01g
head - height: 24.78mm, width: 24.60mm
shaft - diameter: 21.89 -36.45mm, wall - thickness: 3.53mm
Discussion: This object is part of the handle from a known type of 2nd century copper-alloy roman patera type vessel, which would have been shallow with a handle looking similar, although deeper to a modern frying pan but for drinking or 'libations'. A number of complete examples have neem recorvered from securely dated grave contexts uncovered during tje works to widen the A2 between Pepper Hill and Cobham in Kent (Allen et al. 2012, chap.4, grave 6260). There are similar fragments to this reported to the PAS database such as LON-B47821, which still has a length of handle attached.
