FITTING

Unique ID: KENT-D14B17

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Cast copper alloy cruciform fitting. Very worn, but with some traces of gilding present. Decoration comprises a four-petalled flower at the centre of the cross and on the end of each terminal. One arm of the cross has a bulbous projection at its terminal. Some traces of relief decoration and gilding are extant on the reverse, perhaps suggesting that the fitting was a decoration on the end of a staff or shaft, and was intended to be viewed from both sides. Probably dates to circa 1200-1500.
