Acopper alloy Post Medieval asymmetrical mount with integral lugs, dating to the 17th century.
The mount is formed from a flat piece of copper alloy and is asymmetrical in plan. The main body has scalloped sides with a trefoil shaped knop projecting from the upper edge. The lower edge also has a projecting trefoil knop which extends wider than the knop at the upper edge. There are two integrally-cast lugs for attachment at the reverse face of the mount. These are formed from a stem that is broad at the plate and then tapers to a sharp point. Both lugs have been bent outwards in opposing directions. The mount has a dark brown to green coloured well developed patina across all surfaces.
Read (2016) illustrates a number of similar mounts all dating to the 17thcentury (page 39-40 no's 285-291). They were used to decorate leather belts, straps or harnesses. A similar mount has been recorded on the database (SOM-EFEABA) which was discovered in Somerset.
The mount measures 36.37mmlong, 17.7mmwide, 4.04mmthick (including the lugs) and weighs 3.9 grams.
