A late-Medieval or early Post-Medieval silver-gilt finger ring, dating to the period c. AD 1450 to 1550.
Description: The hoop is circular in shape and approximately hemispherical in section with a circumferential rib and groove. The ring's hoop possesses alternating diagonal bands of decoration marked out with double incised lines. They comprise horizontal rows of incised dots, flanked by plain panels. Gilding and file marks are visible on the interior of the finger ring.
Measurements: 21mm in diameter, 6mm wide (the band is 2mm thick) and 4.8g in weight.
Discussion: This ring is an example of a genre of ring popular during the late medieval period, commonly silver-gilt with banded zones of various configurations containing granular decoration. eg. reference 1853,0627.70 in the collection of the British Museum. Similar examples have been reported and declared treasure such as 2007T136 (ESS-6EB935 ) and 2016 T903.
Notes:
In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it fulfils the requirements of Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 and was submitted for consideration as treasure.
