Object type certainty: Certain

Medieval copper alloy strap end, Length: 51 mm, width: 7 mm, thickness: 6 mm, weight: 5.94 g.

The object has a rectangular form and cross section with chamfered edges, with a zoomorphic terminal. The shaft, which is 4mm thick, is plain and tapers in width towards the terminal. This is in the form of a three dimensional dogs head which is largely rectangular in form and section. Where it joins the shaft the underside has an incised chevron. Opposite this the back corners form raised triangular ears sitting behind a facetted upper head. At the centre of the head is a moulded V shaped ridge which continues down the side. Below this it has recessed eyes and a long rectangular snout, with concave sides and an upturned edge dipicting its nose. The mouth is depicted by a linear depression and raised 'lips'. The object is very similar to LIN-E09DB2 and LVPL-A4FDB2. see also NLM-19A2D7 and LIN-5B12EA

An example is known from Church Close, Hartlepool, there found in a late 14th- to late 15th-century context (Jackson in Daniels 1991, 371-371; fig. 23, no. 22).
