An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman plate brooch of sandal or skeumorphic type, dating to c. AD 100 - 200. The remains of the brooch consist of the sub-diamond shaped foot of the brooch with the partial remains of the catch plate on the reverse. The front of the brooch has a raised border around the edge within which are traces of blue-green enamel decoration. The brooch fragment has a brownish green patina. The overall dimensions are as follows: 19.23mm in length, 10.22mm in width, 4.99mm in thickness and 1.37g in weight.

Discussion: In its entirety, the brooch would have taken the form of a stylised sandal. A number of similar examples can be found on the database: similar fragments from Doncaster (SWYOR-F58071) and North Lincolnshire (NLM-79D43D), and more complete examples from East Riding of Yorkshire (DUR-112837) and Lincolnshire (SWYOR-F39F06). Record number DUR-112837 cites Snape (1993) who suggests "They [sandal brooches] are decorated with spots of enamel to represent hobnails...Sandal brooches may represent the left or the right foot, and may have a rounded or pointed toe. The type is found in Britain and on the Continent".
