Fragment of a very simple lead-ally crossbow brooch, probably dating from the Roman period, that is c. AD175-250. Only part of the bow and the head survive. There is no spring or a pin. The bow was roughly triangular in corss-section and it has the typical onion-shaped knops/terminals at the head and on either side of the arms of the cross bar.
This is a very unusual find and if dating from the Roman period it could be interpreted as a pattern for making moulds for casting simple crossbow brooches.
