An incomplete copper alloy buckle post-medieval dating to the period AD c.1500-1600

The buckle is rectangular in shape with a curved frame, making he central strap bar offset and set back from the frame. The bars which are either side of the strap bar are decorated with four rabbets. These rabbets are decorated with transverse lines and grooves, giving a brick like effect. Om each end of the central strap bar are bifid knops.

The height of the buckle is 34.62mm, the width is 25.80mm and the weight is 20.47g.

Please see Whitehead (2003) "Buckles 1250-1800" page 77, No. 476 for similar. According to Whitehead (2003), the rectangular curved frame was rather typical for 16th century AD. This further suggests a specialised function (Whitehead 2003). This function is believed to be fastening armour (Whitehead 2003). The rabbet decoration is also typical for the 16th century AD (Whitehead 2003).
