A fragment of a Roman trumpet derivative brooch dating from the 1st to the 2nd century AD, Alcester/ Almgren 101 type. The fragment consists of the trumpet head with attachment loop, and upper bow, the lower bow, pin and catch plate are now missing. The trumpet head fans out with four sections radiating from the bow and widening towards the top. The widened section is semi circular in shape. The outer radiating sections have patches of blue enamel still in situ. The circular attachment loop projects from the top of the semi circular head. On the reverse the trumpet head is hollow, and either side are attachment loops for the pin, one is worn and broken.
Below the trumpet head the bow widens to a rectangular shape. There is a semi circular projection below this at ninety degrees, these both have traces of silvering on. Below the projection the bow continues in a rectangular shape, with more traces of silvering. Within the bow is part of a square cell remaining, with traces of blue enamel inside. In the centre of this is part of a raised circle. There is a worn break running across the bow. On the underside of this part of the bow is a raised moulded line running up the centre of the bow. This is 8.6mm in length. The brooch has a light green patina, with patches of silvering and blue enamel. It measures 37.7mm in length, 15.9mm in width, and weighs 6.79g.
The brooch is similar to ones shown in Hattatt 2000, page 331 of Alcester type.
