An incomplete cast early Roman copper-alloy brooch of Colchester derivative with a double-pierced lug, dating to c.AD 43-100.

Description: The brooch has open semi-circular cross sectioned wings under which missing the spring and pin would have sat. The wings are decorated with a pronounced mouldings in relief consisting of two wide knurled ribs with a groove between them. The bow is semi-circular in cross section with a pronounced raised knop behind the lug running into a ridge that terminates at the apex of the bow. The bow tapers towards its terminal where it terminates in a collared knop. The catchplate is almost entirely missing but it is clear that it was originally openwork. The brooch is a dark green colour and except for the missing spring and catch it remains in a good condition.

Measurements: 53.44mm long, 28.66mm wide, 17.89mm high and 13.7g in weight.

Discussion: See Hattat, 2000Visual Catalogue of Ancient Brooches, (2000), fig. 157 nos. 874 and 875 for similar bows and feet. The decoration on the wings is most commonly found on Polden Hill and Dolphin brooches such as shown by Hattatt (2000) Figs.157-160, (288-301) and a number of PASexamples such asKENT-589F18.

Class: Colchester derivative, double-lugged, Harlow
