A complete worn cast copper-alloy crotal bell of Post Medieval date c.AD 1600 - 1800 but can probably be dated to the 1740s.

Descritpion: The bell comprises two hemispherical domes divided horizontally by a circumferential ridge. The upper hemisphere has two circular sound holes. A square suspension loop projects from the apex of the upper dome, the loop was possibly drilled, but the hole is filled with iron corrosion likely form the rusted, now missing suspension chain. The lower hemisphere has a long, thin sound slit with circular holes at the ends. The inner iron ball or clapper is in situ. The upper and lower hemispheres have a 'sunburst' or foliate (as in eight radiating petals) design. On the side of the sound slit is a semi-circular area marked by a low ridge, enclosing a heart shape flanked by an 'I' on one side and 'S' on the other. The bell is slightly worn and miscoloured.

Dimensions: 46.34mm in height, 38.17mm in width (diameter of the bell's body) and 55.87g in weight

Discussion: See BERK-39B04F for the use of the heart and for similar makers mark see WILT-1BFA8A. Probably John Stares of Aldbourne, Wilts 1743 - 46. On the PAS database of thirty six bells with hearts, 20 were recorded in Hampshire, the Isle of Wight or Sussex, with five recorded in Norfolk.
