A Medieval copper alloy sword or dagger pommel dating to the second half of the fifteenth century. The pommel is circular in shape and bi-convex in form. The upper surface of the pommel is domed, with a central circular perforation which is worn to one side. It is decorated with a series of four deep V- shaped grooves radiating from the centre forming a saltire. The edges of the grooves have reguklarly spaces indents giving them a ragged appearence which may result from incised transverse grooves, now under mud.
In the middle of each of the quarters created by the incised saltire is a raised triangular - D shaped section that begins at the outer edge of the pommel and terminate two thirds of the way into the centre, and create a crown like appearance when the object is viewed from the side. These are each decorated with an incised transvers line near the edge with evenly spaced diagonal lines running between the transverse line and the edge. The sides of the pommel taper inwards and terminate in a large circular opening. There is an incised line on the side, just above the opening. The opening has vertical sides and a rounded base, pierced by the hole from the top with traces of iron staining around the hole.
It is similar to an example from Norfolk HER 35831 Tacolneston, Norfolk (Gurney, 2002, 161, fig.7D), and NMS-0C90A0 (Norfolk HER 56838) and also Ward-Perkins (1940, 43) fig.9, no.11 dated to the early 15th century.
it is 32.34mm in width, with a length of 31.26mm and a height of 18.42mm and a weight of 65.49g
