Description: A complete silver ingot of probable early medieval date. The object is roughly rectangular with rounded corners. All the surfaces are roughly finished.
Date: 410-1066
Dimensions: Length: 27.10mm, width: 10.66mm, thickness: 7.34mm, weight: 10.62g
Discussion: This ingot is smaller than published examples found but is of the same form as the more common larger examples, for example from Old Buckenham, Dereham area and South Norfolk (see 2006 T455, T57 and T400 respectively (Treasure Annual Report 2005/6, p84, no 229-231). It has been suggested than ingots were used as bullion but M Blackburn (Treasure Annual Report 2005/6, 84) has suggested that in Southern England, where there was an established Anglo-Saxon coinage, it seems more likely that they were used for casting into items such as jewellery. Interestingly other small silver ingots have been found on the same site, see 2010 T650 and 2011 T353.
The object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal and is over 300 years old. Consequently it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.
