An incomplete copper alloy Roman Aucissa brooch, dating to the period c.AD 43-75. The brooch is missing the hinged pin, and the rolled terminal of the head which would have housed the axis bar. The head birfurcates where it would have accommodated the pin, and terminates in worn breaks. It is decorated with a series of moulded transverse bands, the middle of which is narrowed to form a neck. The bow is very steeply arched, is rectangular in cross section, and is decorated with a central moulded longitudinal ridge and a series of transverse mouldings at its base. It narrows to the foot, which terminates in a rounded knop. The catchplate is intact at the reverse of the foot, although its edges have worn breaks. The reverse is undecorated. A light green patina is on the surface, aside from an area at the terminal of the head which is iron stained.
The brooch measures 42.94mm in length, 12.67mm in width at the head, 7.71mm in width at the bow, 25.04mm in thickness from catchplate to bow, and weighs 5.09g.
