A gold aureus of Gallienus (AD 253-268), joint reign with Valerian I, dating to the period AD 255-258 (Reece period 12). VIRTVS AVGG reverse type depicting Mars walking right holding spear and carrying trophy over shoulder. Mint of Rome. As RIC V.1, p. 76, no. 102; Cohen 1269; Gobl no. 121.
Obverse: IMP GALLIENVS P F AVG GERM; laureate and cuirassed bust right.
Dimensions: 19mm in diameter, 2.7g.
One other gold coin of Gallienus, from the joint reign with Valerian, has been recorded as found in Britain (from Canterbury; RIC 70) - R. Bland and X. Loriot, Roman and Early Byzantine Gold Coins found in Britain and Ireland (2010), p. 174, no. 265.
