SEAL

Unique ID: FAKL-AC2376

Object type certainty: Possibly
Workflow status: Published Find published

Post Medieval cloth seal, one half of a two-disc lead seal, bearing, on its face, in raised letters the inscription 29//1//2. In the centre of the reverse is projection which would have extended through the other disc to form the seal. The lower surface bears a gridded pattern and a mould joint line runs across it. Diameter 18.8mm, Thickness 1.0mm, Mass 2.29g.

This object is best interpreted in the light of PAS record BH-88AAA6 which was described as follows:

The two sub-circular discs are joined by a folded connecting strip. One disc bears the relief-stamped legend: 'WOR/STED/[R]EFOR/[MED]'; the other disc reads: '29(over)1/2', which probably indicates the length of the cloth. This is an example of the 'Worsted reformed' series of seals, issued in Norfolk in the late 17th century, for attachment to worsted cloth.
