Silver coin. Probably a denarius of an indeterminate Roman ruler, issue of 43-260. Burnt and crumpled with the loss of all features. Though early Roman material appears in the vicinity, the finder credibly suggests an association with Early Anglo-Saxon burials. As other finds suggest the presence of the cremation rite as well as inhumation, the poor condition of the coin might suggest it has passed through the pyre. Suggested date of reuse: Early Medieval, 475-550.
