An incomplete copper-alloy dragonesque brooch of Roman date, c.AD 75 - 175. The brooch is curvilinear in form resulting in a roughly S-shaped piece, one terminal of which has been lost to an old worn break. The surviving terminal is in the form of an ovate "dragon head" with a central ring and dot style decoration representing an eye. The upper and lower elements of the terminal, likely to represent ears and snout respectively, are lost to worn breaks. The body of the brooch is decorated with a single large central recessed annulet which retains traces of red enamel. The reverse is flat and undecorated.
The metal has a mid-brown patina and is worn. The brooch is 30mm long, 18.7mm wide, 3.2mm thick and weighs 4.2g.
Similar examples can be seen in Hattatt, p.351, fig.210 and are dated to the 2nd century AD.
