MOUNT

Object type certainty: Certain

A complete cast copper-alloy medieval mount, dating to the period AD 1200- 1400. The mount begins with a small flat rectangle section which has three protrusions on its top edge (one each top corner and once centrally). This section remains undecorated. From this section the mount angles inwards at 90 degrees and follows into the main bar plate of the mount, which arches slightly. This is decorated with a series of three squares which are further decorated with cross hatching. The squares are connected with a fine channel like border which finishes horizontally. Below this is a small rivet peroration. The object finishes with an elongated knop. Across the object is minimal but evidence of silver gilding. This mount resembles a casket fitting, but the expansion from the rectangular protrusion to the main body of the mount is inconsistent with most casket fittings.

Overall, the length of the mount is 53.46mm, the maximum width is 15.68mm, the thickness is 4.41g and the weight is 7.80g.
