A complete lead or lead alloy probable net weight, Loom weight or Spindle whorl, of probably the Roman to Post Medieval period, dating from c. AD 43 - c. AD 1900.

The object is cylindrical in form and circular in section. There is a broadly circular perforation running the length of the object, (inner diameter of 6.8 mm), the perforation is slightly off centre. The top of the object is flat, and the base is at a slight angle, there also appears to be a circumferential groove around the perforation at the base of the object. There is evidence of some post depositional damage in the form of indentations, pitting and scratches on the surface of the object. The object is undecorated.

The object measures 33.1 mm in length and is 15.8 mm in diameter at the base and is 14.8 mm in diameter at the top. It has a maximum thickness of 4.1 mm and weighs 43.5 g (1.53 oz).

The object is an off white to grey in colour with an uneven patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail. Lead weights are difficult to date securely or assign to specific tasks without archaeological context, as they change very little and thus a wide date range is suggested. The form of these weights has been suggested as reflecting those utilised for fishing or as net sinkers, though this is difficult to prove securely. Other examples of this type of object have been recorded on the database including, NLM-A79B53, NLM-CE5F27 and NLM-E82ED2.
