BROOCH

Unique ID: PUBLIC-564078

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Late Iron Age or early Roman one-piece brooch of 'Nauheim derivative' La Tene III type dating from c. AD 25-100. The brooch has half the spring surviving, with an internal chord which passes underneath the top of the bow, and then would have gone on to form the second half of the spring and the pin. The second half of the spring and the pin are missing.

The brooch bow is narrow and slightly tapering to a narrow undecorated foot. It is triangular or D-shaped in cross-section, and has an arched profile similar to many brooches of this type. The pointed foot retains a fragment of its perforated sub-triangular catchplate, which is common to the 'Nauheim derivative' type. The brooch does not seem to be decorated. It measures 40.43 mm long, 11.43 mm wide (surviving width at spring), 3.4 mm maximum thickness of bow; it weighs 2.9 grams. The brooch is pitted and corroded, and retains a dark green colour.

Nauheim derivative brooches are common in Britain during the first century AD and were probably manufactured in Britain as well as the Continent. Compare Bayley and Butcher 2004, Fig. 37. For another similar PAS database example, see SUSS-A6BD93.
