A complete copper alloy medieval strap end dating from c.1400-1450. The strap end is worn at the terminal end, and is possibly a two piece, or a one piece with a split. The strap end is rectangular in shape, widening towards the attachment end. The attachment end has a circular rivet in each corner, which was probably iron due to the corrosion surrounding the hole. The rivets run through to the back plate, however the middle of each rivet is now worn and missing. In the centre of the attachment edge is a semi circular indentation, with a raised ridge either side projecting out. Running down from this is a raised moulded line either side, and a groove. In the centre of the front plate are five indented circles, earch surrounded by a ring of indented dots. The upper one is worn and has a dent in it. The lowest one which is closest to the terminal end doubles as a rivet hole, part of the rivet is still in situ on the back plate. The terminal edge has a raised square double line collar, from this projects a sub oval loop with a circular hole in the centre. This is now full of iron corrosion, and suggests it was used for hanging something from. The oval loop bends slightly back. On the reverse the semi circular indentation with a raised ridge on either side is mirrored. The gap between the two plates is rectangular, and is 2.6mm in width. The strap end has a dark green patina, It measures 36.2mm in length, 21.8mm in maximum width, and weighs 11.02g.
A possible similar example on the database is DENO-C246E7. Similar strap ends can be seen in Egan and Pritchard 1991, page 147.
This may alternatively be a book clasp, with the hole fitting over a peg on the book's cover. There is however no good parallel for a book clasp of this form.
