An almost complete copper alloy disc-on-pin buckle of medieval date (AD1200-1350).
The object has an annular frame which is oval in cross-section. The frame has a notched constriction in which the pin rests. Narrow notches on the back of the frame would have held a wire bar at right angles to the pin, but this is missing. The cast copper alloy pin is looped round the constriction. The centre of the pin expands into a circular disc decorated with an oval hollow in the centre, (Redmayne Type B). The pin tapers to a rounded point.
There is no evidence of enamel or gilding. The object has a dark green patina and is in good condition.
Dimensions: 25mm in diameter, 3.5mm thick, 4.8g
These buckles are related to the enigmatic disc-on-pin brooches described by Geake (Finds Recording Guide). They are often gilded copper alloy with a flat disc cast in one with the pin. This would have prevented them being used as a normal brooch as the disc stops the pin entering the fabric. Thought though to be medieval, the date range for these brooches can run into the 16th century.
