Lead possible playing piece. An oval fragment of solidified melt which has hardened on a flat and probably finely sanded surface, and subsequently received a crudely incised cross or a T shape on its upper side. The metal retains a grey tint which may suggest a relatively recent date. This may represent the improvised marking of a small piece of lead-working scrap to distinguish it from others, producing a typically ephemeral object apt to use in a board game. The board may have been equally ephemeral, and might have consisted of no more than lines marked in sand. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700.
