Early medieval iron adze? Length: 109 mm, width: 43 mm, thickness: 15 mm, weight: 161grams. The object is rectangular in form and cross section and consists of a flat ended blade like section, which tapers in width from 43 to 21mm, where it forms a rectangular cross sectioned shaft. This has one face which is rounded to accomodate a circular hole through its centre. Its possibly an adze or a wide bladed chisel?
The objects function is unknown but it was found as part of an assemblage including a possible hammer head LEIC-FF95BA, a bill? LEIC-FFA643 and a possible blade? LEIC-FF8999.
These in turn were found in close proximity to an Early medieval iron shield boss LEIC-FF77A7 and copper alloy girdle hanger LEIC-FFBE99 and a brooch fragment LEIC-FFD36A
.
