A complete copper alloy beehive shaped thimble dating to the medieval to early post medieval period AD 1400- 1550.

The thimble is cast made (which is very usual (Holmes 1991), and is domed in shape, with flared sides and a rounded tonsure top. The recognizable indentations covers the whole item. They starts at the tonsure top and spiral down until c. 1cm before the base edge. Below is a rim, with two faded circumferential grooves.

Overall, the height of the thimble is 25.98mm, the diameter is 22.96mm, the thickness is 2.44mm, and the weight is 15.75g.

c.f Holmes (1991) "Sewing Thimbles", Datasheet 9. In: Finds Research Group- 700-1700, Datasheets 1-24. Figure 2, No. C

With regards to its manufacture, Holmes (1991) suggests that cast made thimbles are more irregular in shape, compared to earlier brass thimbles, which were made via hammering or stamping. The pits, (what thimble makers called indentations) vary in size, depending on the needle size (Holmes 1991).
