Object type certainty: Certain

An incomplete copper alloy Roman Polden Hill type brooch, dating to the period AD 75- 175.

The head of the brooch is cylindrical in shape with complete end caps, and they both have a circumferential groove. On the undersides of the wings, the coils of the spring are exposed. The coil has been wrapped around eleven times, and then the two outer strands of copper alloy have been pulled upwards to the top of the brooches head.

The bow arches from the head and tapers inwards towards the catchplate. From the top of the head, it is decorated with very small, fine horizontal grooves. This pattern ends about a quarter of the way down the bow as the surface patina is damaged. The bow has been bent backwards.

The openwork catch plate is damaged, and the pin is missing.

Overall the brooch is 34.75mm in height, 23.85mm in width and it weighs 9.35g.

Please see Hattatt (2007) "A Visual Catalogue of Richard Hattat's Ancient Brooches" page 301, figure 160, 1509.
