An incomplete Roman copper-alloy composite double-disc brooch (c. AD 100-c. 200).
This is an incomplete disc with a pin-lug at the rear. Due to breaks, the disc is now sub-circular in plan. It has a circular hole, 2.6mm in diameter, at the centre. The double parallel pin-lug is incomplete and the axis bar and pin are missing.
This brooch is corroded and green with flecks of a green patina. The breaks are old and there is iron staining around the catch-plate.
Length: 18.2mm; width: 16.4mm; thickness: 0.8mm; thickness including pin-lug: 10.0mm. Weight: 1.16g.
A similar brooch was found in the same area in 2016. See: IOW-A346E9.
Compare with similar brooches published by Hattatt and dated to the 2nd century AD (Hattatt 1989: 355, fig. refs: 214, 598, 1121, 1122, 1615 and 1616).
