An incomplete copper alloy Colchester (Polden Hill) brooch of Roman date (AD 80-120).

The foot of the brooch, pin and catch plate are missing. The axis bar is visible and partial remains of the pin. The wing is semi-cylindrical in profile with perforated wing caps. The bow head is humped in profile. The bow tapers to a damaged terminal. The foot is missing along with the pin rest at the rear of the bow. The brooch is decorated with three narrow moulded ribs, the middle of which appears to be curvilinear; these possibly extended the length of the bow. The wing caps have incised diagonal decoration from the head of the bow. There is a mid-green coloured patina across the surface. There is abrasion and pitting on the surface and areas where original surface is exposed.

Bayley and Butcher (2004:160) comment that the distribution of Polden Hill brooches is concentrated in the West Midlands. Similar brooches are illustrated by Bayley and Butcher (2004:p.88-89).

The brooch measures 23.25 mmin length, 9.9 mm width (across wings), 4.47 mm thick at the point where the bow begins to taper from the head. It weighs 3 grams.
