A fragment of a lead stylus dating to the period AD c.1100- c.1700.

The fragment is small and stout (28.281mm in length). There is no pointed tip, so this fragment could be a fragment of the main body of the stylus. Both of the break point exposes the internal cavity which is filled with lead. The colour of the object is off white, and it is tubercle in cross sections.

The diameter of the body of the stylus is 6.17mm and it weighs 8.45g.

This fragment is parrallel to WILT-80C827.

Styli of lead are known to have been in use from the Medieval to post-medieval periods and are thought to have been used as often for on-site tasks demanding functional literacy as for more formal writing tasks. Iron and copper alloy styli are more likely to date to the Roman and Early-Medieval period. This information was from another lead stylus on the PAS database under YORYM-F0ED9A.
