A complete copper-alloy hammered 'cob' 8 Maravedis resellado issued for Philip IV of Spain, dating to exactly 1622. Obverse; rampant lion within crowned shield, date of '1622' to right, counter-stamped with the latin numerals 'VIII' (indicating the new within a circular border. Reverse; castle within a crowned shield, latin numerals 'VIII' counter-stamped with the crowned date '1641' within a circular border. C.f with SUR-4E17B8 on the PAS database for a similar coin.
The counter-stamping on this issue indicates the official re-valuing of the Spanish coinage during the year 1641, indicating that it must have arrived in Britain sometime after this point. These pieces are often referred to as 'cob' coinage after the Spanish word for copper ('cobre' ), being made crudely manufactured initially in Spain and later in the Americas for use in the Spanish colonies. As a result of their quick and expedient manufacture, the flans are usually (as on this example) highly irregular in form, being squared off in places and additionally demonstrating edge-splits.
