A cast copper-alloy incomplete early-medieval strap-end of Thomas Class A type 5, c.AD 775-950, presenting hybrdisation of East-Anglian and Northumbrian stylistic motifs and techniques.

Description:The strap-end is formed by a thin piece of copper split at the attachment end with two (now empty) rivet holes. The strap end has even parallel sides, tapering slightly towards the terminal of the strap end. The terminal end is now missing but would likely have been a round eared zoomorphic head. The strap-end has snapped unevenly roughly across the mid point of its length. The decoration is formed of a simple fan of trilobate decoration, a feature of Northumbrian strap-ends (Tomas 2003, 2) fanning downwards a short way from between the rivet holes. Below this is a panel of decoration consisting of a line of parallel bars running parallel top to bottom. These bars sandwich an indistinct knotwork design mostly obscured by corrosion. Within parts ot he design are small slivers of silver, likely evidence of inlaid silver wire, a technique of the class A type 5 and often associated with the repertoire of the Kingdom of East Anglia (Tomas 2003, 2). Apart fromt eh spects of silver the strap-end is mottled light-dark green.

Measurements: 29.53mm long, 14.01mm wide, 3.85, thick and 5.75g in weight

Notes:

Silver is not present in high enough amounts and would have survived as independant object and thus this object would not qualify as treasure under the stipulation of the Treasure Act 1996.

Class: Thomas Class A, Type 5
