One half of a medieval copper-alloy swivel strap fitting, dating to the period c. 1100-1400. It consists of the female element of an articulated, interlocking and swivelling fitting between two straps.
The object has a D-shaped loop extending from a hollow, bulbous body, circular in cross-section and max.11.1mm in diameter (narrowing to 6.3mm diameter where the loop extends). Internally its depth is 4.2mm. It has an internal diameter of 6.3mm.
Both loop and body are decorated with striations, longitudinal on the body and transverse around the loop. The strap bar itself is narrowed and undecroated. To either side, and at the end of the curved edges of the loop, is a zoomorphic beast gripping either end of the strap bar in its jaws. They have moulded and prominent ears, brow ridge and nose. The loop measures max.14.6mm wide.
The object has a worn, brownish-purple coloured patina. It measures 20.9mm in length, max.14.6mm wide, 11.1mm thick and weighs 4.71g. Comparisons can be made to HAMP-A65BE2 and SWYOR-732A86 in shape, but also SUR-936C15, and other animal biting bar buckles.
