A fragment of Roman (AD 50-150) Colchester derivative bow brooch of uncertain type, consisting of part of the lower bow and part of the catchplate only. All breaks are old and the patina is rough and heavily pitted, blue-green in colour with patches missing.
The bow is D-shaped in cross-section, being flat to the reverse and measuring 7.0x5.2mm at the wider break. It narrows to 5.3x5.5mm just before the top of the catchplate extends to the reverse and the bow narrows (to 2.6mm, at the worn break below). The break occurs across the bow and middle of the catchplate. The bow appears to have a worn central decortive rib.
The fragment measures 32.0mm in length, 7.0mm in max.width, 7.9mm in max.depth (at the catchplate) and weighs 5.41g.
